I needed a good zoom for weddings, I have been using a canon 24 1.4 and Sigma 50 1.4 and shooting at 2.8. The 24-70 gives me the 2.8 I like to shoot at plus the range I like to shoot at. I love the Sigma 50 1.4 on my 7D it gives me the look I want. But inside with more then 2 people in the picture I needed to much room so I stopped to switch to the 24L. The problem I found with primes is after an hr of pictures most people start to get grumpy and dont like any delays and stoping to switch lens is a delay so I got the 24-70 2.8 to cover 95% of my pictures.

I had to set my focus adjust on the 7D to +10 for this lens. With the +10 I have just a tiny bit of FF at 24 and a tiny bit of BF at 70 but you have to be at 100% to see it. For cameras that do not have the focus adjust the +10 would be a large problem so if you dont have FA get the canon or plan on sending it in for adjustment, its worth it

A friend ask me to shoot his Hockey game so I used the 24-70 and was very very hapy with the results, out of 66 pictures not one was out of focus. The lens was always in focus. I am not saying it was perfect but it was good enough that you cant tell at 8×10 print size. On my 7D the focus was fast and accurate.

There are some reviews on the net that show this lens has bad corner resolution at 70mm and there are some that show it has better corners then both the Canon and Nikon 24-70’s. The corners on my copy are good but not perfect. The Sigma 50 had about the same resolution at 1.4 as the 24-70 at 2.8 but with the 50 at 2.8 its a bit better. The bokeh is ok but the 50 is better. The colors are good on both and the 24-70 has very little CA.

Ever since I got my T2i, I have been looking for a zoom lens better than the kit lens. Actually, I first got a 50mm f/1.4 prime lens and that was terribly front-focusing. I exchanged it and it’s replacememt was still off although it was much better than the first one. I thought I would never be 100% happy since my T2i does not have micro-adjust capability so I went out and got a 7D with Canon 17-55 f/2.8. After spending nearly 00 more, I expected perfection but the new lens was defective – tact sharp at 2-3 feet, but off by more than a foot at 20ft.

I brought my cameras/lens to a local camera shop and tried Tamron 17-50 non-VC. The display model was not very sharp at all. I am sure it’s just that copy as I have read very good reviews on this lens.

Then I tried the Sigma 17-50 OS (brand new out of the box) and it was also front-focusing. At this point, I was losing hope. The sales guy tried it on another camera he had and confirmed that it was front-focusing. He put a “defective” note on it and got me a second one to try. Finally, this one was in perfect focus. I spent nearly an hour in the store taking about 100 pictures, mainly checking for focus accuracy. At any distance, it was sharp both on my T2i and 7D.

I guess I just had a bad luck streak but I think there are a lot of lenses that are off, maybe from shocks and bumps in shipping. Some people may not be aware or even care but I am pretty picky. I am glad to see that I can get perfectly sharp focus without the micro-adjust capability so I have returned the 7D. My T2i and the new Sigma zoom lens take perfect pictures. I can take a picture of a dollar bill from ~20ft away (50mm, f/2.8) and see the serial number clearly. Although I can do the same with the kit lens, it is much sharper with the Sigma.

This is a great lens. I just wish it had fulltime manual focusing as the focusing ring rotates while auto focusing. It comes with a hood. The Optical Stabilization works well too.

I had researched this lens for almost 4 months before actually deciding to purchase. Like a lot of people that just bought their 7D with the kit lens, I was secretly wishing I had the funds to purchase the Canon 24-70 f2.8L. Unfortunately that lens is a sizable investment when building your kit on a budget.

Thats when the Sigma came in. Sigma has a few lenses in this focal length, all with the same speed (f2.8). One at about a 0 price point, one with an 0 price point, and this one at about 0. The lower price point could be compared to the low end Canon lenses. Fairly quality glass for the price you pay, but very under built (plastic). The higher end lens can be compared to almost the L. Very well built, internal zoom, and HSM for quiet and fast zoom. This lens could be compared to a mid level Canon EF lens. Very well built, just lacking the bells and whistles of the high-end version.

I had a chance to test this lens out on Manhattan Beach in California, and the first thing I noticed was how sharp the lens is between f4-5.6. The focus at f2.8 is clean as well, but does have some soft edges shooting closer to the 70mm range. Still very much a quality image coming out of a lens at less then half the price of the L.

The Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro has an interesting way of getting into Manual focus. There are two switches, one near the base of the lens and the is the focus ring itself that you pull back to engage. Not too big of en issue when shooting video really since you have no need to engage the auto-focus in video mode, but can take some getting used to when switching back forth from video to still.

This also is big. Not quite as big as the L, but very close. It also has matte-like finish that really looks slick. I love the shape of this lens as well. Really looks kickass on the 7D body. Be prepared to drop a little extra cash on the filters however as the thread is 82mm. The upside though is all the filters you buy for this lens, you could actually use a step-down ring and not have any worries of vignetting as far as I know.

PROS: Very solid build, fast focus, fast speed (constant f2.8)
CONS: No IS (but neither does the current L), slightly soft edges at 2.8/70mm, Large filters needed

If you don’t have enough cash to drop on the L series lens, but still want a quality lens, absolutely go for this lens. Very happy with this purchase.

A well built lens by Sigma. Those who are not used to (inexperienced) in focusing properly will realize that this lens is very sensitive. Two objects sitting next to each other but one is slightly farther away from the camera (say 1-2″) will show noticeable difference in the sharpness level. So be very careful with pointing at the right object. Otherwise practice will bring you closer and closer to great results.

Very light for its size and capability compared to the Nikkor 70-300mm or 18-200mm VR or not. Well-priced (0-0). Fast built-in motor (HSM) and very very quiet.

The best part is the f/2.8. Able to capture images in low light settings, indoor, fast movements, way faster and way sharper than 70-300mm or 18-200mm (f/3.5 or f/5).

Highly recommended.
